What Is a Dead Point in Climbing?
Avila Climbing Co.Every climber has felt it, even if they didn't have a name for it: the split second at the top of a move where you stop rising, hang weightless, and the next hold is right there — if you commit. That instant is the dead point, and learning to use it on purpose is one of the biggest unlocks in movement.
The physics of the dead point
When you launch toward a hold, your body rises, slows, and — for a fraction of a second at the apex — becomes weightless before gravity takes back over. At that peak, the hold you're reaching for feels almost still relative to your hand. Grab it there, at the dead point, and you catch it with the least force. Reach too early and you're fighting your own momentum; too late and you're already falling away from it.
Why it matters
Timing the dead point lets you make moves that raw power can't. On a big throw to a crimp, catching at the dead point means your fingers meet the hold when your body is calm, not yanking. It's the difference between a controlled latch and a desperate lunge — and it saves a surprising amount of energy over a long route or a session of projecting.
How to practice it
- Slow it down. On easy terrain, do deliberate reaches and notice the weightless beat at the top. Learn the feeling before you need it under pressure.
- Deadpoint drills. Pick a move slightly out of static reach and try to catch the hold exactly at your apex — no earlier, no later. Reset and repeat.
- Watch your feet. A good dead point starts from the ground up: drive through your legs, and let the hand arrive at the top of that drive.
- Film yourself. The dead point is easier to see than to feel. A few phone clips will show you whether you're catching early, on time, or late.
Why we named a hoodie after it
The dead point is a moment of quiet commitment inside an explosive move — which felt like the right name for our heaviest, most deliberate piece. The Dead Point Hoodie is 12.4 oz washed cotton built for cold sends and colder belays: relaxed fit, deep hood, and our "Don't Fear The Fall" graphic across the back. Free US shipping, eight washed colorways.
Whatever you're projecting this season — find your dead point, and commit. Don't Fear The Fall.
